How do you recover tags from a vehicle siezed by police?

My vechicle was taken by police in 2001 and dmv are still charging me for the tags, how do i get the tags back?

How do you recover tags from a vehicle siezed by police?
You need to cancel your registration. Tags / license plates are the property of the state anyway, you just pay to use them.

Get new ones for your next car.

It is just that simple.
Reply:what are tags??
Reply:If you%26#039;re still the registered owner you still have to get tags. sucks eh?
Reply:I really think you%26#039;re asking the wrong people here.

Have you explained to DMV about what happened to the vehicle? Surely they have a procedure you (or they) can follow if the vehicle is no longer in your possession.

Alternatively, have you considered calling the police department who seized your vehicle and discussing this with them?

You didn%26#039;t tell anyone here what state you%26#039;re in so it%26#039;s probably going to be difficult for anyone to offer you a really thorough answer.
Reply:By now the car has either been sold or destroyed so you are going to end up paying for the tags.
Reply:I really don%26#039;t know how you would do this. This is what I would do; take the paperwork to them (showing the date the vehicle was siezed) and they should be able to erase the fees. I do not know if you%26#039;ll be able to get the tags back - you%26#039;ll have to ask them about this also.

Good luck.........
Reply:You need to prove to them you no longer own the vehicle. You don%26#039;t, do you?
Reply:The police should have a bill of sale from a police auction. That information should be public domain. Get a copy and get it to the DMV.
